The challenge is roughly 3700 miles and
passes through England, France, Spain, Gibraltar, Morocco, Western
Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal and finishes in The Gambia. Given a bit
of luck and a fair wind Germany’s finest executive saloon should
make it in around 22 days.
Having met some Plymouth – Dakar veterans at a party in a
field in Devon, we are told there are some particularly
interesting hazards along the way.
We could have been the victims of some scare-mongering
(especially since Team Lodge Losers were under the
particularly wicked influence of Mr Scrumpy) but we are told
to watch out for mine fields, breaking down 200 miles from
civilisation in the Sahara Desert and incredibly corrupt
border guards amongst other things.
On hearing these warnings we have furnished our BMW with
a comprehensive tool kit consisting of a role of gaffer tape
and a hammer and plan to spend a lot of cash on bribes.
On a serious note this is not a holiday. Under normal conditions one would not consider
crossing the Sahara in a 20 year old car. Aside from that
driving 8 hours a day in sweltering heat sitting on vinyl
seats will get a tad uncomfortable. If you think we deserve
it then please sponsor us.
